Why We Don't Install Vinyl or Wood-Based Board & Batten
Board and batten is offered in vinyl and in engineered wood (OSB-based) panel systems, and both have a place in the market. We don't install either, and it's worth explaining why rather than just saying no.
Vinyl board and batten is affordable and low-maintenance in the sense that it doesn't need painting, but it's a thin material that expands and contracts significantly with temperature swings — movement that shows up as visible waviness on tall, flat vertical panels more than it does on shorter horizontal lap courses. It also isn't the actual water barrier; it relies entirely on what's behind it, and any gap or fastener error is harder to catch during installation because the product flexes.
Engineered wood board and batten uses an OSB substrate with a resin-saturated overlay. It performs well when the overlay stays fully intact, but any breach at a cut edge, fastener hole, or seam — exactly the kind of detail board and batten has more of than lap siding — lets moisture reach the wood substrate, and OSB doesn't recover well once it's wet. In a climate with our rainfall and moss season, that's a real trade-off, not a hypothetical one.
Fiber cement doesn't have either problem: it's dimensionally stable and doesn't rely on an intact surface layer to resist water at the core. That's the standard we hold installations to, and it's why we standardized on James Hardie rather than offering multiple siding materials.
What a Correct Board & Batten Installation Involves
The style adds detail work that lap siding doesn't have, and skipping any of it is what causes the moisture problems Ferndale's climate is quick to expose.
The drainage gap
Behind the panels, we install vertical furring strips to create a rainscreen gap — a continuous air space that lets any moisture that does get past the surface drain out and dry, rather than sitting against the panel and sheathing. This is one of the most commonly skipped steps on lower-bid installs, and it's one of the most important in a marine climate.
Flashing and weather-resistive barrier
A properly lapped weather-resistive barrier goes on before the furring strips, with flashing at every horizontal transition, window and door head, and the base of the wall. On board and batten specifically, the top and bottom terminations of each panel run need attention, since that's where water traveling down the vertical seams has to be redirected out and away from the wall.
Fasteners and battens
We use corrosion-resistant fasteners rated for coastal exposure, driven per Hardie's fastening schedule — not guessed at. Battens are set to cover the panel seams with consistent spacing and reveal, and joints are sealed with a high-quality, paintable sealant rated for exterior fiber cement, not general-purpose caulk.
